Mokoia Pa

Around this site, a strong and extensive Maori Pa
guarded the narrow part of Wai Mokoia (Tamaki River),
a favoured route between the east and west coasts.

Because of its strategic position, the pa would have seen
many skirmishes between competing Maori forces.

In 1821, Mokoia was besieged then overcome by well-
armed warriors from Northland, The pa was razed to the
ground by the victors and the captured defenders were
put to death.

Six years later, the explorer D'Urville visited the area
but found only a few scattered houses, while the Mokoia
Pa site had disappeared into the encroaching scrub.

Plaque erected 2005 by Panmure Historical Society Inc
with help from Auckland City Council
